This is one of my favorite cookbooks and it gets used OFTEN! Authentic Japanese flavors and most of her recipes are not difficult to make。 I cook lunch for my Japanese mom every Sunday and she has loved everything I make from this book。 This is saying a lot because my mom is a wonderful cook and I grew up eating her delicious Japanese food every day。 Makes me so happy that I can now cook for her, and even though I will never be as good of a cook as her I love making the dishes from Harumi-san's This is one of my favorite cookbooks and it gets used OFTEN! This is one of the best Japanese cooking books if you are looking for simple home food。 If you are looking for famous Japanese food recipes, street foods, fast foods etc this is not the right cook book for you。 Also the pictures are only so-so。 This is not one of those basic cook books I'd recommend for those who hardly know anything about Japanese kitchen and foods。 Recipes seem pretty authentic and taste like food in Japan (no westernized stuff)。I, for once, am tired of the same old street foo This is one of the best Japanese cooking books if you are looking for simple home food。 If you are looking for famous Japanese food recipes, street foods, fast foods etc this is not the right cook book for you。 Also the pictures are only so-so。 This is not one of those basic cook books I'd recommend for those who hardly know anything about Japanese kitchen and foods。 Recipes seem pretty authentic and taste like food in Japan (no westernized stuff)。I, for once, am tired of the same old street food recipe books。 Harumi offers simple but tasty, homely fare recipes。 There are foods from different categories so it is easy to build a tasty meal by combining。 Recipes are mostly pretty simple but involve a lot of cutting and julienning。 There are some vegan recipes and lots of vegetarian recipes。 。。。more

Some recipes that I have tried were nice, but I found some of them not worth the effort (after having made them)。 The introduction about the different ingredients was useful。 For someone trying to get more in depth knowledge about cooking and the Japanese cuisine, I was dissapointed by this book。 The book boils down to an introduction ('my husband really loves this dish etc。 etc。') followed by the steps necessary to make it。 In hindsight I would have spent my money elsewhere。This book is nothing Some recipes that I have tried were nice, but I found some of them not worth the effort (after having made them)。 The introduction about the different ingredients was useful。 For someone trying to get more in depth knowledge about cooking and the Japanese cuisine, I was dissapointed by this book。 The book boils down to an introduction ('my husband really loves this dish etc。 etc。') followed by the steps necessary to make it。 In hindsight I would have spent my money elsewhere。This book is nothing compared to a book like Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art。 It's not a bad book, but I don't relate with the hyped reviews this book got。 。。。more

If I had access to some of these ingredients, I think most of the recipes seem pretty doable。

This was a very enjoyable cookbook full of simple, everyday Japanese recipes。 The author is quite popular in Japan with books, magazines, clothing, and house- and cookware。 There are plenty of photographs; every recipes gets at least one。 No desserts, but I didn't find myself missing them。 Included are cupboard essentials (incl。 some sauce recipes), plus (I think) US/Canada-centric stockists at the end。 This book was worked on in London, so this book has Western readers in mind, no doubt about t This was a very enjoyable cookbook full of simple, everyday Japanese recipes。 The author is quite popular in Japan with books, magazines, clothing, and house- and cookware。 There are plenty of photographs; every recipes gets at least one。 No desserts, but I didn't find myself missing them。 Included are cupboard essentials (incl。 some sauce recipes), plus (I think) US/Canada-centric stockists at the end。 This book was worked on in London, so this book has Western readers in mind, no doubt about that :) The focus is on quality, and keeping the seasons in mind。Some of my favorite recipes here (no seafood included here since I avoid them mostly): Deep-fried chicken with leek sauce, mini-chicken fillets with mayonnaise, simmered pork in crepes, ginger pork, onigiri rice balls with ground chicken, cold soba noodles with grated daikon, tofu salad with sesame dressing, tofu with crunchy toppings, miso soup with potato and onion, watercress with light peanut dressing, sauted leeks and mushrooms。All recipes look easy with calm, clear layout and good introduction to each recipe。 I think this is very much worth owning, a good Japanese cookbook。 :) 。。。more

Will give a star rating when I've made some of the recipes, but this book seems to be just the introduction to Japanese-style home cooking I was looking for: easy recipes with simple ingredients。 Definitely going to break out the mandoline, though, as I have neither the knife skill nor the patience for finely julienning so many vegetables! When I was younger I worked for a Japanese company for a number of years and so grew to love Japanese food。 If you would like to try cooking Japanese food for yourself, this is an excellent book to begin with。 I am lucky in working close to many Japanese shops, so ingredients are easy for me to find (and you can probably order online) but how easy ingredients are to find locally, probably depends on where you live。Harumi Kurihara is titled, “Japan’s answer to Delia Smith,” and she compares to De When I was younger I worked for a Japanese company for a number of years and so grew to love Japanese food。 If you would like to try cooking Japanese food for yourself, this is an excellent book to begin with。 I am lucky in working close to many Japanese shops, so ingredients are easy for me to find (and you can probably order online) but how easy ingredients are to find locally, probably depends on where you live。Harumi Kurihara is titled, “Japan’s answer to Delia Smith,” and she compares to Delia, in that her recipes are equally easy to follow。 First and foremost, this is a well designed paperback, which is nicely laid out, with good colour photographs and a list of useful addresses at the back of the book to find everything you will need to cook the recipes in this book。The book begins with an interesting introduction, store cupboard essentials that you need to start with and then a list of recipes。 Most of these recipes are very easy to cook – light, full of flavour and very healthy。 The author walks you through the recipes and also adds lots of little personal comments, which make this fun to read, as well as cook from。 A great addition to my shelf of cookbooks – I absolutely love this。 。。。more

Very instructive cookery book with beautiful photography and easy to follow recipes。 A good introduction in Japanese cuisine beyond sushi, yakitori and the like for everyday dishes or for a little party。 The recipes are all designed around ingredients you can, reasonably easy, find in Belgium and I suppose by extension in Europe。 I made quite a few of them and all where very delicious。

A good selection of authentic Japanese recipes and lots of photos

Straightforward, easy to follow Japanese recipes are the unifying theme of this delightful cookery book。 Harumi Kurihara has designed recipes around ingredients available to the European cook whilst maintaining the key flavours and textures of Japanese home cooking。 All of the dishes we have made so far have been delicious and at least as quick as two other cookery books with 'minutes' in the title。 This book is a lovely and unintimidating introduction to Japanese cookery or a handy reference fo Straightforward, easy to follow Japanese recipes are the unifying theme of this delightful cookery book。 Harumi Kurihara has designed recipes around ingredients available to the European cook whilst maintaining the key flavours and textures of Japanese home cooking。 All of the dishes we have made so far have been delicious and at least as quick as two other cookery books with 'minutes' in the title。 This book is a lovely and unintimidating introduction to Japanese cookery or a handy reference for weeknight dinners for more experienced cooks。 。。。more

Yes, I'm reading a cookbook。 Reading。 My recent spate of Murakami novels got me interested in Japanese home cooking。 I'm cooking every recipe in the book。I've liked everything I've made, and LOVED a few things。 I feel pretty knowledgeable about japanese cuisine now。 Some of the measurements aren't translated correctly, but that's part of the adventure。 Yes, I'm reading a cookbook。 Reading。 My recent spate of Murakami novels got me interested in Japanese home cooking。 I'm cooking every recipe in the book。I've liked everything I've made, and LOVED a few things。 I feel pretty knowledgeable about japanese cuisine now。 Some of the measurements aren't translated correctly, but that's part of the adventure。 。。。more

One of the least appetizing books on Japanese foods that I've come across。This is 'meat and potatoes' Japanese cooking, and the recipes contain a tiresome repetition of flavorings。 Also, if you have problems with salt or soy allergies, forget it。 There's soy sauce in almost every recipe。 One of the least appetizing books on Japanese foods that I've come across。This is 'meat and potatoes' Japanese cooking, and the recipes contain a tiresome repetition of flavorings。 Also, if you have problems with salt or soy allergies, forget it。 There's soy sauce in almost every recipe。 。。。more
